Oak Leaf Secrets
Most people will miss this button all together so first, consider yourself a part of a special group of elite observers. Secondly, if you keep reading, you will learn some little known facts about our pastor, our church, and our name.
Psalm 1-3 and Isaiah 61:1-3 are the key verses we use to explain our name. It goes like this. The live oak is one of the strongest evergreen trees known to man. The leaf (i.e. disciple) absorbs the sun and provides the essential nutrients to grow the tree (i.e. the local church) and help it become be a strong, fruitful, healthy shelter. You’d have to read the verses to really see it, but it works pretty well.
However, that is not actually where the name came from. Before we started as our own church in Canton, we were supposed to be a campus of a larger church in Cartersville by the same name (no longer in existence - long story). The pastor who started that church had bought oakleafchurch.com when he was a youth pastor because of a large development being planned near where he lived in Florida. Several years later when God finally called him start a church, he used the name of the website he already owned and the rest is history.
Here is another interesting fact. Did you know the five colors of Oak Leaf’s Five Focuses are the five colors associated with an oak tree? Think about it. Blue is the water source, green are for the leaves, red and orange represent the leaves changing colors on most oak trees, and the gray is the truck. Yes, it is true the trunk is actually brown, but that is an ugly color and they can appear to be gray from a distance. Sort of.
One more for the road. Our pastor is Will Goodwin. His father is Billy Goodwin of the contemporary Christian recording artist Newsong. They have bee performing concerts and running tours for over 35 years. If you don’t know much about Newsong, here are the two things they are most known for: Winter Jam and Christmas Shoes. Oh, and the guy who sings Christmas shoes, that is Will’s dad. He will sing it for you if you ask nicely.
Hope you enjoyed these little hideaway tidbits. Don’t go blabbing your mouth about all of this. It is supposed to be secret after all. :)
